Section 8 and Housing Assistance

How Can I Get Section 8?
As I am sure you are aware, the Section 8 program (RAP) is a hud government funded program offered by housing authorities. The Section 8 program is available to a limited number of families and allows them to pay approximately 30% to 40% of their income towards their monthly rent.  The program pays the balance of the rent directly to the landlord in the form of a monthly check. Herein lies the problem. Obtaining a voucher for Section 8 housing (Now called the Housing Choice Voucher Program) is close to impossible.

Most major cities have closed their Section 8 waiting lists for years now. Here at RentAssistance.us we still see smaller towns opening up their waiting lists every once in a while (oftentimes as much as 1 time a year). The problem is that this is not guaranteeing you a section 8 voucher. This just means you are on a second list that will take years to get a voucher.

So as far as the question goes, 'How Can I get Section 8', there really is no answer other than find the local housing authority website and wait until the waiting list opens up and get on that list. Then, if you are lucky, may 2-3 years from that point, you can get a voucher. A lot changes in people's lives in that time period. You would have a better chance of finding a college grant and getting a college education and job than waiting for a section 8 voucher.

This is why we have created RentAssistance.us. We list out area resources for rent assistance other than just section 8. We list other government entities that provide rent assistance. We also provide non profit organization listings of agencies that provide rental assistance for those in need. If you are in need of rent assistance, you do not have time to wait to get your rent paid. Section 8 vouchers are just not the answer in this day and age.
